Types of PTE Exams
Pearson offers several versions of the PTE exam for different purposes.
1. PTE Academic (Most Common)

- Who should take it: Students applying for undergraduate, postgraduate, or PhD programs abroad
- Also accepted for: Australian and New Zealand skilled migration visas
- Accepted by: All Australian universities, most UK universities, and thousands globally
2. PTE Academic UKVI
PTE Academic UKVI is specifically approved by the UK Home Office for UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). It is required for candidates applying for UK visas (student visa, skilled worker visa, family visa) where a Secure English Language Test (SELT) is mandated.
- Who should take it: Candidates applying specifically for UK visas who need a SELT-approved test
- Note: Standard PTE Academic is NOT accepted for UK visa applications — you must specifically book PTE Academic UKVI
3. PTE Core
PTE Core is for immigration and work visas, where general English is required rather than academic English.
It differs from PTE Academic in its focus on real-world language tasks rather than academic content.
- IRCC (Canada) accepts PTE Core for permanent residency and work visa applications.
- Focuses on every day and workplace English—for example, writing emails or responding to practical situations.
- Uses the same Global Scale of English (10–90) and delivers results within 1–2 business days.
4. PTE Home (A1, A2, B1)
PTE Home tests assess everyday English skills and are primarily accepted for UK family visas (spouse/partner/parent visas). These are much simpler tests compared to PTE Academic.

PTE Exam Format and Structure
PTE Academic tests all four language skills — Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening —
The total test time is approximately 2 hours. Unlike PTE, which tests each skill in a separate section, PTE Academic integrates skills within tasks.
Part 1 — Speaking & Writing (54–67 Minutes)
The Speaking and Writing section is the first and longest part of PTE Academic, and it also contributes to your Reading and Listening scores through its integrated tasks.

- Describe Image: Use a consistent structure — Overview → Key Features → Conclusion. Practice templates for graphs, bar charts, pie charts, and process diagrams.
- Re-Tell Lecture: Take brief notes during the audio (speaker, topic, key points, conclusion). Use your notes to re-tell — do not try to memorise.
- Write Essay: Always plan with a clear introduction, 2 body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Use complex sentence structures and a range of academic vocabulary.
- Summarise Written Text: Write exactly one sentence (grammar-checking tools count periods!). Include the main idea and supporting details within 75 words.

- Fill in the Blanks (Reading & Writing): Read the surrounding context carefully. Watch for collocations (words that naturally go together).
- Multiple Choice, Multiple Answer: Read all options first. Negative marking applies — only select options you are confident about.
Listening Tips
- Write from Dictation: This is the MOST important listening task — it contributes to both Listening AND Writing scores. Type every word exactly, including articles ('a', 'the') and prepositions. Spelling must be perfect.
- Highlight Incorrect Words: Follow the audio closely with your eyes on the transcript. Click words the moment you notice a discrepancy.
- Summarise Spoken Text: Take structured notes with key points. Write 50–70 words — staying within the word limit is important.
General PTE Strategy Tips
- Improve your typing speed — many tasks require fast and accurate typing (Write from Dictation, Essay, Summarise).
- The microphone cuts off automatically — do not pause for too long or you will lose recording time.
- There is no human examiner — the AI rewards fluency and pronunciation, not accent. Focus on clarity.
